the proposal

January 5th, 2001 Rosheen Bishop (otherwise known as Sheen, or my Canadian girlfriend) and I got engaged. On the 4th, I payed a surprise visit to her in Anaheim, CA, where she was working at the time, training servers for the Rainforest Cafe that just opened there. The next morning, before she had to go to work, we went to Disneyland. I asked her to marry me while on the Indiana Jones Adventure ride. For those who don’t know, this is her favorite ride. In December 2000 I got the chance of a lifetime to help open a new Rainforest Cafe in Anaheim, California. It was such an honor because I was the only international person picked. I was super excited but kinda sad because I had never been away from Cale for that long. Due to work schedules and living in different countries, it was common to go 2 or 3 weeks without seeing each other, but never 2 months. I decided, however, it was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

On January 4th, I had just finished an 18 hour day, walked into my hotel room, and plopped down onto my bed when the phone rang. It was Cale. He asked how my day had been and I remember thinking “He’s on his cell phone. What is he doing at midnight on his cell phone?” Then he asked if I heard my door knocking. I said no and then he started to laugh. He was knocking on 387 not 378! I couldn’t believe my ears. I opened my hotel room door to find Cale running down the hallway towards me. I just couldn’t believe it. Cale is usually so unromantic, so this totally surprised me.

The following day I didn’t have to work until 2:30 p.m. so Cale and I decided to go to Disneyland. My favorite ride is Indiana Jones and we always have to hit that one first. Cale had just bought a cute little video camera and was taping our wait in line and then the ride once it started. I was in my own little world lost in the scenery and music when I remember hearing Cale scream my name. This was right when the arrows are about to shoot out from both sides of you. I thought to myself "Uhhhhh, what on earth does he want?!" When I turned to Cale, he had the video camera in one hand and a ring in the other. Screaming at the top of his lungs, he asked me to marry him. The big ball was now rolling towards us and I just couldn’t believe Cale had surprised me again. It really caught me off guard.

When I arrived at work and shared my story all my crew members, they gave me the rest of the day off. Cale and I spent it back at the park, but we didn’t go on Indie again. Somehow it wouldn't have felt as magical as the last time!
