about cale
I, Jason Cale Burr, was born September 3rd, 1970 in Longview Washington to Cheryl & Daniel Burr . I commonly refer to my folks as "Mama & Ralph." (Ralph is dad’s middle name.)
I have one brother, Micah, who is four years younger than me. We grew up out in the country where we had over 3 acres to play on. On the property was a patch of Vine Maple trees that we loved to climb in as a kids. Looking back at it now, it’s a wonder I didn’t end up killing myself from all of the crazy feats I’d try. I also liked to draw, build things with Legos, and play in the sandbox.
My favorite activity as a kid, though, was riding motorcycles. My first one was a red, one-speed mini bike that dad made. (I’ve always admired dad’s handy-man skills.) Craving more speed, my next motorcycle was a Honda 50, and then a Honda 80 after that. I spent countless hours riding motorcycles. I particularly like to jump them.
We had a few dogs through the years, but my favorite one was a black lab named Kizzy. She even had a litter of puppies.
As a teenager, I hated living so far from town so far from friends so far from anything. It was like a prison sentence. And if I was a prisoner, that would’ve made mom the Warden. One of the few things I was allowed to do was go to youth group. So naturally, I became actively involved.
It was in 1983 that I really began to develop a love for music particularly hard music. My collection began with Def Leppard’s Pyromania and Quiet Riot’s Metal Health.
In high school, I was the quiet guy who spent a lot of time in the art department and on a diving board. Thanks to my aunt Linda encouraging me (and talking my mom into letting me), I joined the diving team my freshman year. Eventually I became pretty good at it. My senior year, I went undefeated through the season, took 4th at state, and even broke the Mark Morris High School 6-dive diving record.
It was breaking the school’s record that actually lead to my first job as a n artist. I was awarded Mark Morris "Athlete of the Week." One perk for earning such a coveted the title, was getting an "Athlete of the Week" jacket. I went to a local screen print shop to pick up the jacket and while I was there, I asked the lady working there if they needed an artist. They didn’t at the time, but took my phone number anyway. I got a call from them a couple weeks later in February 1988 asking me to do some art for a back of a jacket.
Out of high school I earned my Associates degree at the local community college, Lower Columbia College. It was while I was at LCC that I was introduced to the Macintosh computer. I fell in love immediately. However, it wouldn’t be until five years later that I would finally own my first Mac.
I started to teach myself how to play drums about this time. After a year or so I picked up playing the guitar. I found the guitar to be much more creatively fulfilling.
The summer of 1991, I moved out of my folks house for the first time to live with a friend who had a homemade recording studio. That summer I spent writing, playing and recording music with a couple other guys. I guess I would categorize this as the first incarnation of my music progeny Cerebral Noize.
During the fall of 1991, I moved to Bellingham Washington to attend Western Washington University. Upon the move, I started going by my middle name, Cale, because it suites my personality better than Jason. In Spring of 1994, I graduated magna cum laude from Western with a B.A. in Visual Communication, where I concentrated in computer graphics, illustration and multimedia.
After graduating, I moved back to Longview for a few months and then back up to Bellingham again in October 1994. In March 1995 I got a job working as an illustrator and designer for an advertising agency named Wright, Hart & Mather. January 1997 I also began working as a graphic artist for Media Access Internet Solutions, a Web development company.
In 1995 I started playing racquetball. For the first couple years I would play one to three times a week, but eventually I became more serious about the game. Now I play around 12 hours a week. My biggest motivation for playing is to keep in shape.
It was also in early 1995 that I first realized that my computer was going to be the key to actualizing my dream of recording a Cerebral Noize CD. So I spent the next eight years taking the steps that I’ve needed to take to make this dream a reality. It was a really slow process, but also very rewarding. I released the CD, Process, in November 2002.
In October of 1997 I met my favorite Canadian, Rosheen (Sheen) Bishop. You can read more about this, in great detail, on the how we met page.
During the summer of 1999, I moved to Bellevue Washington, the land of Starbucks Coffee and rush-hour freeway parking lots.
In June of 2004 Sheen and I moved to Bellingham where we bought a house.
